Learn to Weave
- Deborah Chandler
July 9 - 13 (Mon. - Fri.)

Weaving is an endlessly fascinating and multi-layered creative pursuit. Learning to weave can be a life-long process but you have to start at the beginning. This class is meant for the rank beginner, and for those who are returning to the loom after a long absence and need a refresher. The class will cover all phases of weaving: designing, warping the loom, and working through the basic weave structures on a four harness loom. Students will learn to wind a warp, dress the loom from front to back, read a pattern draft, and fix the variety of inevitable problems that occur as they weave their first pieces of cloth. By the end of the five days students will have the tools and understanding to continue their exploration of weaving with pleasure, patience and satisfaction. No Prior Experience Necessary.
DEBORAH
CHANDLER travels to the U.S. only rarely. Harrisville Designs is
fortunate once again to host this talented weaver, beloved teacher
and author of the best-selling text for new weavers, Learning to
Weave. She spent 16 years as a professional weaver, teaching
throughout the U.S., running a weaving shop and writing a monthly
column for Handwoven magazine, “Your Weaving Teacher.” Since 1989,
when she first traveled to Honduras as a Peace Corps Volunteer,
Deborah has devoted most of her considerable talent and energy to
organizations involved in improving the lives of artisans in
underdeveloped countries. She is currently working with the women’s
weaving cooperative “Mayan Hands” in Guatemala, where she makes her
home.
