INFORMATION
Harrisville, New Hampshire is a village whose tradition in textiles dates back more than two hundred years. We are continuing that tradition at Harrisville Designs by manufacturing quality yarns, looms and accessories. In addition, since 1971 we have sponsored workshops to give students the opportunity to study with exceptional instructors in the relaxed atmosphere of this unique village.
Our workshops are held on the second floor of the renovated Harris Mill located across the street from the Harrisville Designs offices. Built in the 1830’s as a spinning mill for locally raised wools, it now serves as The Knitting & Weaving Center providing excellent studio space for students. This beautiful brick building sits at the end of the canal overlooking the mill pond and originally operated on water power. It is relished for its sunlit windows, fresh air and tranquility.
In order to create the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom, we limit enrollment in our workshops. Classes meet daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; however, the studio is open to students 24 hours a day. During the week students will have the opportunity to tour our spinning mill, listen to a talk on the history of Harrisville while picnicking next to the mill pond, and get together for an informal wine/lemonade and cheese party.
HOUSING is available on the 3rd floor (no elevator) of the Cheshire Mills Boardinghouse, local bed and breakfast inns, and rooms in private homes offered by individuals in the village and nearby. There are also many motels and campgrounds in the area. If you want to splurge and bring the whole family, click here for a phenomenal retreat located just minutes away.
EATING. Harrisville is a small village with a General Store that sells groceries, prepared food and has a small café. Keene and Peterborough, both about 10 miles away, offer a good variety of restaurants and stores.
GENERAL INFORMATION will be sent to you when you register. You will receive a map on how to get to Harrisville by car, bus or plane, and an accommodations sheet, which explains in further detail about our boardinghouse and local places to stay. About a month before your workshop begins you will receive a reminder letter along with a list of what you will need to bring to class.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at: The Knitting & Weaving Center: 603-827-3996 Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 - 5.
WORKSHOP TESTIMONIALS
"I would like to say a big THANK YOU! for a truly spectacular week of weaving and camaraderie! Coming to Harrisville and participating in the weaving workshop was a wonderful experience, one I won't soon forget. I came as an inexperienced, intimidated wannabe weaver and left with the confidence to FINALLY warp and weave on my own HD loom. I am so proud of my accomplishments and grateful for the amazing teaching ability of Tom Jipson and the warmth, knowledge and friendliness of the owners and staff of Harrisville Designs. The boarding house experience was wonderful, making new friends and having "kindred spirits" to interact with certainly enhanced the workshop experience and the environment... all I can say it WOW! I always thought New England was the most beautiful place I had NEVER seen and now I can say it is truly the most beautiful place I have EVER seen! Everything lived up to my expectations and I cannot say I was disappointed in anything.
Thank you so much for making this all possible and I hope to be back next year and transition from "Learn to Weave" to "Advanced Beginning Weaving". - Patrice Anita
